Plant selection

Find a plant that likes your yard back.

“Desert adapted” is a good start, but your elevation, cold snaps, sun, soil, and available space matter too. The right plant should fit your yard, not start a long-term argument with it.

A quick check before the garden-center trip

  1. Check mature height and width. Future-you does not want the shrub to eat the walkway.
  2. Check sun exposure and cold tolerance for your exact spot.
  3. Look at water use and establishment needs, not just the words “drought tolerant” on the tag.
  4. Group plants with similar water needs so one irrigation schedule can suit the group.
  5. Check local native-plant and invasive-species guidance before planting.
We link to regional plant lists instead of declaring one universal “best desert plant.” A plant that loves Tucson may have a different opinion about a frosty, higher-elevation yard.
